Explore Our Fishing Adventures

Cabo is known as the "Marlin Capital of the World" for a reason. The unique underwater geography creates a nutrient-rich environment that attracts marlin, dorado, tuna, and more. Our expert local captains have spent their lives on these waters, and our experienced crew handles everything from bait to tackle so you can focus on the catch.

To ensure a stress-free start to your early morning charter, location matters—stay close to Marina Cabo San Lucas so walk-ons stay simple on charter day. If you're flying into Los Cabos International (SJD) on fishing day, booking private airport transportation in Los Cabos straight to the marina is the easiest way to make your dawn departure without the taxi scramble.

We cater to every angler's dream, from fun family outings to serious sportfishing expeditions. Our fishing fleet is equipped with tournament-grade gear; we handle licenses, bait, and tackle so you can focus on the thrill of the catch. All our trips are all-inclusive Cabo fishing charters — no hidden fees. For offshore and deep water trips, see our dedicated page for Cabo deep sea fishing trips, and for luxury outings, private yacht charters. Beyond fishing, Cabo offers plenty to explore on shore and offshore, and the Baja backdrop is second to none.

A typical morning starts at the slip before first light. The crew loads ice, bait, and drinks while the captain checks wind on the Pacific versus the Cortez. If the swell is up on the west side, Gordo is often the calmer plan. If the Pacific is flat, San Jaime and Golden Gate come into play. You do not pick a bank from a brochure the night before — the boat leaves with a plan and adjusts on the water.

Cabo Sport Fishing Season by Species

Cool water favors striped marlin. Warm water favors blue marlin and dorado. Wahoo shows on the Pacific banks later in the year. Yellowfin tuna are fished on both the Sea of Cortez and Pacific sides.

Which bank you run depends on the sea, not the hotel town. Gordo sits on the Cortez side. San Jaime, Golden Gate, and Finger sit on the Pacific. The month-by-month table — every species we already publish — lives on Cabo fishing seasons month by month.

Cabo Sport Fishing Species — What You Can Catch

Cabo is widely called the Marlin Capital of the World. Destination guides (Visit Los Cabos, cited by clubsolaris) put about 850 species inside a 30-nautical-mile radius and describe on the order of 12,000 game fish landed in Cabo each year. Clubsolaris also calls Cabo the only destination with striped marlin on the water every day of the year. Bisbee's Black & Blue, held in Cabo in October, has posted a purse over $7.4 million USD (pescaya, cabosanlucascharters) — a destination event, not a Boats Baja credential. None of those figures is a Boats Baja catch log.

  • Striped marlin — The year-round billfish of Cabo San Lucas. Offshore boats work them on the Pacific side at Golden Gate Bank (Picante). Light or standard trolling gear; many days produce multiple hookups when bait is stacked.
  • Blue and black marlin — Heavy tackle, fighting chair, full-day run. San Jaime, Golden Gate, and 1150 Bank. These are the fish that fill Bisbee's week; we do not claim a tournament seat from that fact.
  • Yellowfin tuna — Gordo Banks on the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific banks. School fish around dolphins and larger “cows.” The 200 lb class is why full-day boats make the Cortez run.
  • Dorado (mahi mahi) — Weed lines, sargassum, and flotsam. Half-day or full-day. Often mixed with tuna when birds and skipjack mark the same water.
  • Wahoo — High-speed trolling on San Jaime and Finger Bank (Pacific). Fast strikes; the crew switches lures on the run. No mile figure for those banks is published on this site.
  • Sailfish — Offshore with the marlin mix on the same 8-hour boats. Surface teasers and bait-and-switch when they tail.
  • Roosterfish — Inshore, Pacific beaches and rocky points. Light tackle or fly. The species that makes a half-day worth booking if billfish is not the goal.
  • Inshore year-round — Snapper, grouper, sierra, jack crevalle, pargo, amberjack, Pacific barracuda. Same marina start as the offshore boats; the captain stays on the coast instead of running the banks.

Inshore vs Offshore Sport Fishing in Cabo

Few Cabo operators spell this out. The split is where you fish and what you bring, not a different company. You leave Dock A either way. The captain chooses coast or banks after the briefing.

Inshore

Coast, beaches, rocky points. Light tackle. Roosterfish, snapper, grouper, sierra, jack crevalle. Our half-day product is 4–5 hours and stays 5–15 miles of Marina Cabo San Lucas — the range already published on deep sea fishing in Cabo. The 3-hour sunset window is the half day fishing charter. Typical for families, first-timers, and fly fishing. A shorter day still uses a licensed captain, bait, and the same marina start.

Offshore (deep sea)

Banks and deep water. Heavy gear, trolling, fighting chair. Marlin, tuna, dorado, wahoo, sailfish. Our full-day product is 8 hours and runs 20–35 miles (same deep sea page). Same fleet as inshore; you pay for range, fuel time, and the chance at billfish. If someone in the group wants both, the captain can mix a coastal start with a bank run on an 8-hour day when conditions allow.

Sport Fishing in Los Cabos vs Cabo San Lucas

Los Cabos is the municipality: Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Sports fishing in Los Cabos and charters out of Cabo San Lucas use the same boats and the same banks. Every trip on this site leaves Dock A, Marina Cabo San Lucas.

The water is not one sea. The Sea of Cortez is usually the calmer side — better for inshore and light tackle. Gordo Banks sits there. The Pacific is the rougher, stronger offshore side. San Jaime, Golden Gate, and Finger Bank sit there. Cold Pacific water meeting warmer Cortez water is the upwelling the destination guides cite for bait and billfish.

Hotel town does not change the fishery. Stay in San Jose del Cabo or on the corridor and you still clear the Cabo San Lucas harbor. Winter water in the destination sits in the mid-70s °F; September runs near 85 °F (Top Anglers, pescaya). Visit Los Cabos describes about 300 boats leaving before dawn in high season. Sport fishing in Los Cabos is the San Jose geographic page.

Transfer time from the corridor or San Jose is a hotel-van problem, not a fishing one. Plan to be at Dock A early enough for licenses, a briefing, and a 6 a.m. lines-off on full days. If you fly into SJD the same morning, you are betting on immigration and the highway — most groups sleep in town the night before.

Types of Cabo Fishing Charters

Choosing the right fishing charter in Cabo depends on your group size, target species, and how long you want to spend on the water. Here's a breakdown of every charter type available through Boats Baja, so you can pick the perfect trip:

Private Deep Sea Fishing Charters

Our most popular option. A private Cabo deep sea fishing charter gives your group exclusive use of the boat and crew. You choose the duration — half-day (5 hours) or full-day (8 hours) — and our captain customizes the trip based on current conditions and your target species. Full-day trips reach the productive offshore grounds, while half-day trips stay closer to shore and are ideal for families or first-timers. For the banks we fish, target species, and full-day logistics, see our Cabo deep sea fishing charters →

Luxury Yacht Fishing

For the ultimate VIP experience, our Cabo yacht charters combine world-class fishing with five-star luxury. Vessels from 44' to 95' feature air-conditioned cabins, premium sound systems, spacious decks, and onboard chef service. Perfect for corporate events, bachelor parties, anniversary celebrations, or serious anglers who want the best of both worlds. Want to level up your party? You can add a professional DJ to your charter — our friends at DJANES specialize in it. Browse our yacht fleet →

Shared (Group) Fishing Charters

Don't have a full group? Our shared fishing tours pair you with other anglers for a full day of deep sea fishing at a fraction of the cost. You'll share a professional charter boat, crew, and the excitement of big game fishing. It's the most affordable way to experience Cabo sportfishing without sacrificing quality. License is paid at the marina on that product, not buried in the seat price. Book a shared fishing tour →

Choosing duration is simpler than the brochures make it. Book 4–5 hours if the group is mixed ages, wants roosterfish or sierra, or has a dinner reservation. Book 8 hours if someone in the boat cares about marlin or a 200 lb tuna. The 3-hour sunset window is a third product — same marina, shorter clock, not a substitute for a bank run. Fly gear is a fourth product: inshore beaches and points, not the fighting chair.

Fly Fishing in Cabo

For the purist angler, fly fishing in Cabo San Lucas targets the legendary roosterfish, jack crevalle, dorado, and even yellowfin tuna using specialized fly gear. Our experienced fly fishing guides know the best inshore spots along the beaches and rocky points. Learn about fly fishing in Cabo →

Where We Fish

Cabo Sport Fishing Grounds — Gordo, San Jaime and Golden Gate Banks

Cold Pacific water meets the warmer Sea of Cortez. That mix is why Cabo holds bait and billfish. Mile figures below are only those already on our deep sea page: Gordo about 8 miles off San José, Golden Gate about 25 miles Pacific, inshore 5–15, full-day 20–35. San Jaime, Finger, and 1150 are named without a distance.

Gordo Banks

Sea of Cortez side. Two seamounts about 8 miles off San Jose del Cabo (same figure as deep sea fishing in Cabo). Yellowfin tuna and marlin (Lands End, Cabo Magic). The 200 lb tuna run is why full-day boats go there. Calmer water than the Pacific banks on most mornings.

San Jaime Bank

Pacific side. Yellowfin tuna, wahoo, blue and black marlin. Named by Cabo operators (Lands End, Cabo Magic, fishingcabosanlucas). A full-day Pacific run. No distance from our marina is published here, so none is stated.

Golden Gate Bank

Pacific side, about 25 miles out (same deep sea page). Striped marlin is the species Picante associates with this ground. Full-day only — a half-day does not have the range.

Finger Bank

Pacific, north of the other ledges. Picante lists large marlin; our deep sea page lists wahoo and tuna with Iman Bank on the same run. No mile figure on this site.

1150 Bank

Farther offshore. Blue and black marlin (fishingcabosanlucas). Full-day only. No mile figure on this site.

Inshore: Land's End

Roosterfish, sierra, jack crevalle, dorado around the Arch. Half-day stays 5–15 miles of the marina; full-day runs 20–35 miles to the banks (deep sea page). Same Dock A start as the bank boats.

Every Charter Includes

What's Included in Every Charter

FAQ

Cabo Fishing FAQ

What is the best month for fishing in Cabo San Lucas?

Cabo fishes year-round. Cool water favors striped marlin; warm water favors blue marlin and dorado. The month-by-month table lives on Cabo fishing seasons — we do not repeat it here.

What is included in a fishing charter?

All our private charters include a licensed and experienced captain and crew, all necessary fishing gear (rods, reels, tackle), bait, and coolers with ice. Many packages also include drinks, snacks, and lunch. Please check the details of your specific charter.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes, a Mexican sportfishing license is required for every person on board who intends to fish. We can easily help you arrange for your licenses before your trip. For more official information, you can consult the CONAPESCA website.

What is your cancellation policy?

We offer a flexible cancellation policy. You can receive a full refund if you cancel at least 14 days before your scheduled trip. Please contact us for details regarding weather-related cancellations or rescheduling.

Can we keep the fish we catch?

Yes — you can keep your catch within local regulations. Many local restaurants offer a "you catch it, we cook it" service, and we can give you great recommendations.

How much does a fishing charter in Cabo cost?

Cabo fishing charter prices vary depending on the boat size, trip duration, and season. Half-day charters (5 hours) start around $450 USD for smaller boats, while full-day offshore trips (8 hours) on larger vessels range from $1,000 to $5,000+ USD. All our prices include captain, crew, gear, bait, and licenses — no hidden fees.

What types of fishing charters are available in Cabo?

We offer private deep sea fishing charters (half-day and full-day), luxury yacht fishing, fly fishing, and affordable shared fishing tours. Whether you're a solo angler, a couple, or a large group up to 10 people, we have the perfect charter option. Visit our deep sea fishing page or shared tours for details.

How far in advance should I book a Cabo fishing charter?

We recommend booking at least 2-4 weeks in advance, especially during peak season (September-December) and holidays. Popular boats fill up quickly. However, we sometimes have last-minute availability, so don't hesitate to contact us even if your trip is coming up soon.

What is sport fishing in Cabo San Lucas?

Sport fishing in Cabo San Lucas is rod-and-reel fishing from a licensed charter — private or shared — for marlin, tuna, dorado, wahoo, and inshore species. Boats leave Marina Cabo San Lucas. Same fishery as sportfishing (one word) and sports fishing; the boats and banks do not change with the spelling.

What can you catch sport fishing in Cabo?

Striped marlin, blue and black marlin, yellowfin tuna, dorado, wahoo, sailfish, and roosterfish, plus inshore snapper, grouper, sierra, and jack. Offshore boats work Gordo, San Jaime, Golden Gate, Finger, and 1150. Inshore boats work Land's End. Peak months are on Cabo fishing seasons.

What is the difference between inshore and offshore sport fishing in Cabo?

Inshore is coast and light tackle — 4–5 hours, 5–15 miles (roosterfish, snapper, grouper, sierra, jack). Offshore is banks, heavy gear, 8 hours, 20–35 miles (marlin, tuna, dorado, wahoo, sailfish). Same fleet, different range. Miles are those already on the deep sea page.

Is sport fishing in Los Cabos the same as in Cabo San Lucas?

Yes. Los Cabos is Cabo San Lucas plus San Jose del Cabo. All of our charters leave Dock A, Marina Cabo San Lucas. Hotel town does not change the banks.

"Just what the doctor ordered! A day out on Reel Medicine was perfect — seamless from the meet-and-greet at Dock A to disembarking with our catch of the day. We wrestled multiple blue marlin, caught one and released a couple more. My two boys, 8 & 9, and I were worn out from the heavy lifting and ready for the pool. Great time and we really appreciate the memories!"

"Had an excellent time on the Wahoo. Our cruise did an overnight stop and Boats Baja stepped up to customize our trip — not all fishing charters in Cabo do, and their flexibility was much appreciated. Beginner-friendly and the deckhand was great. Hope to come back again!"

"Awesome time fishing in Cabo with Boats Baja! It was my first deep-sea charter so I didn't know what to expect, but the crew were really friendly and had food and drinks ready when we boarded. We almost landed a giant blue marlin, then reeled in a dorado — the highlight. Professional service and they let us customize the trip exactly how we wanted. Highly recommend!"
